- Many western clerics were banished to the east in 355
- The one movement between west and east was a case of voluntary exile.
- This map shows the greatest intensity in terms of west-east mobility.
This chronological sequence of maps shows the change of mobility of exiled clerics from the fourth to the sixth centuries. You can see that there was very little west-east mobility in the period from 356 to 535 when the relationship between both parts became increasingly strained and the western emperor was eventually deposed in 476. As a consequence of the temporary reconquest in the age of Justinian, clerics again moved between Italy, North Africa and the east. Click on a map to start the slide show.
